Yes! You can recycle your mattresses and box springs – absolutely free.
The State of California participates in a mattress recycling program called Bye Bye Mattress. The program was established by law and is operated by Mattress Recycling Council, a nonprofit that uses a recycling fee collected on each new mattress and box spring sold ($11), to make recycling easier in our communities
Options for free mattress and box spring recycling include:
Retailer takes your old one away when they deliver your new mattress.
Did you buy a new mattress? California’s law requires retailers that are delivering new mattresses to offer consumers the option to have a used mattress picked up at the time of delivery, at no additional cost. Mattresses delivered by common carrier like UPS or FedEx are not under this obligation. Retailers can refuse to take back a used mattress if it poses a health or safety risk.
Curbside Bulky Waste Pickup Service
Do you subscribe to a regular weekly garbage and recycling pick up service? They may offer a free pickup of bulky items, right from your curb.

Save Resources
The Bye Bye Mattress program converts your old product from waste to recycling. Old mattresses are recycled into new, useful products.
Extend Landfill Life
Our landfills are less crowded as old mattresses are diverted to recycling.
Prevent Illegal Dumping
Free options for disposal may help prevent desperate measures of dumping mattresses illegally. Illegal dumping comes at great costs to the community, including public health impacts from erosion, storm drain backups that flood communities; enabling diseases spread by rodents and other pests it attracts, and by mosquitoes that breed in standing water it collects. People caught littering can receive fines up to $1,000, and in the end, we all pay for the cleanup costs.
